The free and easy way to get a 10% discount and other perks
Strand’s loyalty program, Strand+ is free to join and offers you 10% off your first full price purchase as a member. This is one of my favourite benefits of the loyalty program because it’s quick and easy to get and use. The other one I really like is the 10% birthday discount (make sure you add your birthday to get this).
But the core feature of the program is Loyalty Vouchers, which you earn based on your spending. So, as a new member you’ll earn a $10 Loyalty Voucher for the first $50 you spend. Then a $5 Loyalty Voucher per $50 spent after that.
It’s worth noting Strand has two periods per year when it calculates spending and vouchers:
- January 1 – June 30
- July 1 – December 1
This means you need to spend $50 between January and June to get a Loyalty Voucher for that period. Or, to put it another way, if you spent $30 in June and then $20 in July, you wouldn’t get a voucher because the spending is split between these two periods.
Loyalty vouchers are also issued at the end of these periods. So if you’re strategic, you could wait until you’ve got a voucher before buying something new.

The lessons I learned working in Strandbags that can help you shop smarter
Anyone who’s worked in the high-pressure world of retail sales knows there’s a lot to the job – including training on the features and benefits of new designs, brands and collections. With my journalistic thirst for knowledge, I loved this part of the job – and I still use a lot of what I learned when I’m shopping for bags today. Maybe even more now that I tend to shop online. So to help you choose the right pieces, I thought I’d let you in on five of the insights and observations I always come back to.
1. Bag size matters, for more than one reason
A lot of people (myself included) will fill a bag if there’s extra room, leading to a heavier, bulkier bag than necessary. On the other end of the scale, a bag that doesn’t perfectly fit your wallet, phone, keys etc could end up bursting at the seams. I saw both scenarios more times that I could count when I was selling bags, and my guidelines now are to choose a bag that fits everything I need, with about 20% extra space for those one-off occasions when I need to put something else in there, like an umbrella.
2. For the lightest luggage, it’s hard to beat a soft case
This might be controversial to say, because I know hardshell suitcases are more popular, but a soft case will always be lighter than a comparable hard case. This is because it’s mostly made of fabric, which is lighter than the durable materials used for hard cases.
You can still get relatively light hard cases, so if that’s your preference go for it. I would just say to keep in mind that the quality really makes a difference with hard cases. Because they’re less flexible than fabric, lower-quality options are at risk of cracking if handled roughly (which I’ve seen happen in transit a few times).
3. A zip or flap closure is the most secure for handbags
Sure, tabs and magnetic closures may look chic on some designs, but without the option to fully close the bag, there’s a chance something may fall out. Some people might be fine with that risk, but personally I’d rather choose a nice design that is also secure.
4. Round straps stay on your shoulder better
Have you ever had a bag strap slip off your shoulder? For bags with two straps, this is more likely when the straps are flat, because they have no way to stay except by your shoulder position and the weight in the bag. Rounded straps, on the other hand, can be crossed over each other on top of your shoulder to better secure them in place. As someone with a small frame, I’ve found this tip very valuable – but unfortunately flat straps are more common.

What else to know when shopping with Strand
Strand offers free standard delivery for orders over $99. Otherwise, delivery is $7.95 for small items like wallets, $10.95 for medium sized items like duffel bags or small suitcases, and $17.95 for medium to large suitcases and other large items.
There’s also a $7 fee per additional item if you’re buying medium or large items and don’t qualify for free delivery. If you’re under that $99 threshold, I’d suggest filtering sale items by lowest price – adding something like a luggage tag, passport cover or card holder could end up cheaper than the delivery fees you’d otherwise pay.
Strandbags allows change of mind returns in the first 30 days when items are in their original condition with all tags still attached. The fastest way to return an item for a refund is by going to a Strandbags store – you can also exchange items there. Otherwise, you can fill in the return slip that came with your online order and post it via Australia Post. But you need to use tracked delivery and have to pay the delivery costs if you post it back.
