Katie Holmes is mourning the loss of her Dawson’s Creek co-star James Van Der Beek, sharing an emotional, handwritten tribute following his death on 11 February. He was 48.
Katie, 47, took to Instagram with a deeply personal message, describing the news as “a lot to process” and writing that her words came from a “heavy heart.”

Addressing James directly, Katie reflected on the years they spent working together on the beloved teen drama, which aired from 1998 to 2003. James famously portrayed Dawson Leery, the show’s lead, while Katie starred as Joey Potter.
“James, thank you,” she began. “To share a space with your imagination is sacred – breathing the same air in the land of make believe and trusting that each other’s hearts are safe in their expression.”
Katie reminisced about the bond they formed during their time on set, recalling laughter, conversations about life and even shared appreciation for James Taylor songs. She described their years together as “adventures of a unique youth,” capturing the magic of growing up both on and off screen.
In her tribute, Katie praised James’ character, highlighting his “compassion, bravery, selflessness and strength.” She also honoured the life he built beyond Hollywood.
“An appreciation for life with the integrity that life is art – creating a beautiful marriage, six loving children – the journey of a hero,” she wrote.

Katie shared that she mourns him “with a heart holding the reality of his absence and deep gratitude for his imprint on it,” expressing both profound grief and appreciation for the impact he had on her life.
She concluded her message by addressing his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and their six children, offering unwavering support during this difficult time.
“Kimberly, we love you and will be here always for you and your beautiful children,” Katie wrote. “We are here for you always. And will always be there to shower you with love and compassion.”
James had been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in 2023 and publicly revealed his diagnosis the following year. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from friends, fans and former colleagues who remember him not only for his iconic television role, but for his kindness, devotion to family and enduring spirit.
