Joan Rivers has passed away, aged 81

Legendary comedienne Joan Rivers has died, aged 81.

Joan passed away in New York today, one week after going into cardiac and respiratory arrest during a routine operation on her vocals chords. On the weekend, she was placed in a medically induced coma.

Her daughter Melissa Rivers and her family decided to take the 81-year-old off life support this morning. It is understood she died a short time later, surrounded by family and loved ones.

“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers,” Melissa said in a statement.

“She passed peacefully at 1:17 PM surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Mount Sinai hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.

“Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated.

“My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”

Just yesterday, Melissa said her mother had been taken out of intensive care and into a private room where she was being kept comfortable.

Since Monday, family and friends have held a bedside vigil for the Brooklyn-born star, who is famous for her vigorous wit.
