Lawson Mahoney knew exactly what he was getting into when he entered The Traitors Australia manor. As a model and a reality star with just one title, Made In Bondi, under his belt, he felt like a small fish in a big pond compared to his other co-stars. But instead of letting it intimidate him, he wanted to use his status to his advantage.
“I’ve watched previous seasons in preparation and I figured there’s a consistent pattern that the the faithful’s that either play hard or actually are daft usually make it to the end. The loud, the brazen and the smart ones get out. So I thought, ‘Hey, I am a model and the youngest of the cast and the most unknown out of every single person on that cast, truly. So I thought I could use that to my advantage.”
Lawson says that by day five, he found it hard to keep up appearances.
“I’d give my little speeches and people would be like, ‘What? I thought you were an idiot’,” he laughed.
“I think maybe I left it too late to switch on the thinking hat publicly. But that was my strategy, I played dumb.”
But wait… does Lawson actually play chess?
While Lawson was busy acting like a hot, silly model, a rumour started to go around the group that Lawson was secretly a professional chess player. It was a fact that made Keira Maguire certain that Lawson was a traitor. But Lawson has no idea how Keira found out about his secret skill.
“I am a predominant chess player, not professional, but in the top ten-ish percent of chess players — but I didn’t tell anyone on the show,” Lawson reveals.
“I didn’t tell a single soul that I was a good chess player for that reason. But subconsciously, she must have read my eyes or something. That Keira, always two steps ahead.”
A new side revealed
Before appearing on The Traitors, Lawson first appeared in Made In Bondi, a reality show based on the worldwide hit franchise, Made In Chelsea. Admittedly, the show was a bit of a flop and Lawson didn’t particularly like the version of himself that made it on screen.
“The only other show I’ve been on showed every ounce of my worst elements, if not, made up my worst elements,” Lawson admits.
“So, I was pleased watching this back, seeing little jokes, my personality and having my happy manner actually shown. Maybe there could have been more of my strategy in the show but I have very minimal notes on what made it to air. The feedback I’ve gotten has been so positive. I’m ecstatic.”
