Father charged after newborn dies in crash

A man has been charged after the car he was driving rolled, killing his six-week-old daughter.

The 24-year-old man was allegedly driving at speeds of up to 130km when he lost control of his car on the Great Northern Highway, 130km south of Broome on Saturday.

His baby daughter was thrown from the car when it crashed, and was found half an hour later by a passing motorist, who rushed her to meet an ambulance crew travelling from Broome.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the little girl died in Broome Hospital overnight.

Police have charged the driver with dangerous driving occasioning death and he has been refused bail. Detectives are now investigating whether the baby was restrained and if the driver was under the influence or alcohol.
