It’s been a tumultuous time at Today in recent months with the breakfast show losing presenter Karl Stefanovic, followed by his co-host, Sarah Abo, who went on maternity leave.
Now the team have opened up about their former colleague, Karl.
Tom Steinfort, who is currently in the hosting chair, defended his predecessor, Karl, telling TV WEEK on the Logies red carpet, “I don’t have a bad word to say about Karl”.
“When I was starting out in the industry, Karl could not have been kinder or more generous to me, and I know that’s the same for a lot of people,” Tom says.
“What’s happened has happened. I think all of us, I’m sure Karl included, wish things didn’t pan out like they did over the past few months.
“He could have had a great send-off. It didn’t work out like that. I hope he has success. I hope we have success.”
His thoughts were echoed by Sarah Abo, who recently gave birth to her first baby, a boy called Sonny.
“We worked together for so many years. We all hope he goes well into the future,” she said. “We’re all thinking about him every day. He’s been a great asset to the program.”
Karl parted ways with Today in June, after 21 years on the show. His departure followed a controversial episode of his podcast, The Karl Stefanovic Show featuring an interview with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson.
Asked whether he would like to be the permanent Today co-host, Tom says, “I’m having a lot of fun at the moment”.
“I have to be at work tomorrow morning and TV hosts don’t have the best track record the morning after the Logies,” he says with a laugh, referring to the time in 2009 when Karl famously went on air on Today after the Logies looking visibly under the weather.
