Hundreds attend girl’s birthday after mother’s heartbreaking plea

When all of Mackenzie Moretter’s classmates turned down their invitations to her 10th birthday party her mother to Facebook with a touching appeal.

Every birthday should be a cause celebration, especially when you’re a kid.

On Tuesday, Mackenzie Moretter turned 10. But, in days leading up to her party none of her guests accepted their invitations.

Mackenzie, who suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Sotos syndrome, a form of gigantism, told her mother she was upset none of her classmates wanted to come to her party which prompted her heartbroken mother to post a message on Facebook.

“I originally invited 10 girls three weeks prior, but we got two cancellations and the other girls’ moms didn’t RSVP at all,” Jenny Moretter told ABC News.

“It’s happened to her on previous birthdays where she would end up sitting alone with family. I didn’t want it to happen to my daughter again this year.”

The day before the party, Jenny, 38, left a few messages on her local Shakopee, Minnesota community Facebook pages inviting families with daughters Mackenzie’s age to stop by.

In the post the mother explained that her daughter’s medical condition causes her to grow faster, experience speech and learning delays and have social disabilities, all of which made it difficult for her to make friends.

Jenny hoped that at least 10 friends in her circle would bring their children but she never expected the surprise Mackenzie was about to receive.

More than 400 people came throughout the day to help celebrate, including NFL Minnesota Vikings player Charles Johnson and his family.

Also among the lovely strangers were Frozen’s “Elsa” and “Snoopy” who visited from a local amusement park and even the fire department.

“There was a DJ, arts and crafts tables, balloons for kids, a bubble machine where kids could run through, and local businesses donated food and supplies,” Moretter said.

“I was amazed at how quickly the community pulled together this huge birthday party in less than 24 hours.”

Not only overwhelmed with kindness, Mackenzie was flooded with gifts but her mother said in the spirit of the occasion, her daughter wouldn’t be keeping all of the presents for herself.

“We’re planning on donating a lot of the gifts to other children with similar needs like Mackenzie at our local children’s hospital,” she told America’s ABC.

Jenny said she hoped the day would inspire people to encourage their children to be more tolerant of other kids with special needs.

“I just want people to know they should accept their children for who they are,” Moretter said.

“And for kids who see other kids alone, I’d love to encourage them to go say hi and definitely not make fun of them. I hope parents educate their children more and that this can be a learning project for everybody.”

Mackenzie’s mother added that a few of the original invitees to the party stopped by the wish Mackenzie a happy birthday and apologies.
