While winter might be in full swing for us here in Australia, there’s an entirely different kind of season on the horizon this month; season two of The Summer I Turned Pretty, that is.

The TV adaptation of Jenny Han’s novel of the same name is returning for yet another season, but this time there’s murky waters lurking in this summer romance.

While season one was all about Belly (Lola Tung) coming into her own while exploring new relationships, season two is about figuring out once and for all where her heart truly lies.

Ahead of its release, TV WEEK sat down with the cast of The Summer I Turned Pretty – Lola Tung, Gavin Casalegno, Christopher Briney and Sean Kaufman – to talk all things season two, including the dream ending they’re wishing for.

“It was intimidating,” says Lola of returning for season two to reprise her role as Belly. “But also at the same time, comforting to be back with all the same people and in a familiar space.”

“Jumping into the same shoes, but a little different, made it just a lot more fun and it allowed us to really explore the world more,” adds Gavin Casalegno, who plays the ever-affable Jeremiah.

Given the pressures that naturally come with any book-to-screen adaptation, the cast has done well to live up to the expectations of diehard fans and maintain fun in the process.

Staying on par with the novels, the second season seemingly follows the events that occur in the second book, It’s Not Summer Without You, with a few surprises added in the mix.

What is season two of The Summer I Turned Pretty about?

While Belly used to count down the days until she could return to Cousins Beach, she’s not sure summer will ever be the same with brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah fighting over her heart.

Adding to that is the arrival of an unexpected visitor trying to sell their beloved beach house, as well as the return of Susannah’s (Rachel Blanchard) cancer that casts a dark cloud over season two.

“Susannah is the glue to our family, because [their father Adam] isn’t there. So, she’s a huge part of the foundation of our family and without her it’s kind of crazy,” Christopher explains of his onscreen mother.

His character Conrad takes it especially hard, acting out in an irrational – or rather, emotional –manner during season two as his relationship with Belly fractures due to the looming loss of his mother.

While the season finale has yet to even air, fans are still desperate to know one thing; does Belly end up with Conrad or Jeremiah?

While the answer can be found in the third novel, We’ll Always Have Summer, there’s still a chance the series will throw fans a curveball with an entirely different ending if it returns for a third season.

As for the cast, well they have their own ideas for how they’d like the series to end.

“Steven wins the Powerball, which is at 1 billion – he wins all of it, no taxes, and he funds himself to live on Mars with Matt Damon,” says Sean Kaufman, who plays Belly’s older brother Steven.

As for Lola? “Belly becomes a pro volleyball player and spikes a ball all the way to Mars to hit Steven on the head and bring him back down to earth,” she laughs.
