Twenty-one years ago the world mourned the passing of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis who died on May 19, 1994.
Jackie O was almost universally adored and was the subject of many images that captivated the world – Jackie the mother in Capri pants walking with her children, Jackie as the wife of the President’s dazzling the world, Jackie in that pink suit and Jackie as the woman in morning sobbing behind a black veil.
Eight years after JFK’s assassination, the widowed First Lady found love again and forged a new life for herself as Jackie Onassis on her new husband Aristotle Onassis’ private island of Skorpios.
Despite her move to Europe Jackie O remained an American treasure.
“Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was a model of courage and dignity for all Americans and all the world,” said President Clinton upon her death. “More than any other woman of her time, she captivated our nation and the world with her intelligence, elegance and grace.”
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis was aged 64 when she died.
