Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry could be hitting our screens once more!
According to Variety, Kate Hudson has signed on to develop a sequel to her beloved 2003 rom-com How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days with Paramount, and is set to produce the project alongside Academy Award nominated producer Stacey Sher.
The plot is yet to be finalised and the project is said to be in the “early stages” of development, but the details already floating around have fans of the original movie hopeful they’ll be seeing a lot more of Andie and Ben.
Is How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days getting a sequel?
While nothing is formally locked in and there’s no finished script yet, an insider tells Woman’s Day that this sequel simply wouldn’t be moving forward without Kate and co-star Matthew McConaughey attached in some capacity.
“Details are slim on the plotline as it’s still in the very early stages with no finalised script yet, but this project wouldn’t be going ahead if Kate and Matthew weren’t attached,” the source says. So far Kate’s only listed as a producer but she and Matthew wouldn’t miss out on reprising Andie and Ben for the world.”
The insider adds that the pull for both actors goes beyond nostalgia. “It’s one of their favourite movies and they loved working together,” they say.
Filmmakers – and fans – are hoping both Kate and Matthew will reprise their roles, though that will come down to whoever ends up writing the film.
What is the plot of the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days sequel?
Two very different storylines are reportedly on the table. “There are two storylines in the works – how to ‘keep a guy’ during a midlife crisis, or an ’empty nest’ story where their kids are going through it,” the insider reveals.
Either direction would put Andie and Ben firmly in a new life stage – a long way from the dating games of the original, where magazine writer Andie chose Ben as the subject of her article on how to drive a man away in 10 days, while Ben bet he could make any woman fall for him in the same timeframe.
The characters fell for each other for real without realising it – and more than 20 years on, it seems the sequel wants to explore what comes after their happily ever after.
When will the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days sequel be released?
Sadly, we can’t expect it anytime soon. “They’re still looking for a screenwriter and have yet to confirm whether [original director] Donald [Petrie] will return, so the earliest they would be going into production would be later next year,” the source says.
Still, the appetite is there. “This is a project close to their hearts. They both genuinely love working together and the movie’s earned itself a huge cult following over the years,” the insider adds. “They can’t wait to bring this movie back for the fans.”
Marking the film’s 20th anniversary in 2023 and reflecting on their on-screen chemistry, Kate and Matthew reunited for an Instagram Live chat, where Kate joked, “[With] respect to our now-partners, we do kiss nicely. It was always a very nice kiss.”
Meanwhile, Matthew put their spark down to a shared sense of humour: “We enjoy going toe-to-toe.”
“I think maybe it has something to do with our freedom. I feel like we’re both very free,” Kate told him at the time. “We don’t constrict ourselves to an idea of what we’re ‘supposed’ to be doing. There’s something spontaneous about the way we were able to work together.”
