According to fitness expert Michelle Bridges, most New Year’s resolutions fail because they’re “made in desperation with legs in the air trying to get into the last pair of skinny jeans from the Boxing Day sales bin.” She says that “decisions made in a highly emotive state are rarely good ones.”

The founder of the 12 Week Body Transformationtrainer on The Biggest Loser and ambassador for the Australian Institute of Fitness believes consistency is the key to staying fit and healthy.

“If you are waiting for motivation to kick in nothing will ever happen. It’s the same as crossing your fingers and wishing for the weight to fall off,” she says, adding that “people think I am constantly motivated to train but I’m not, I’m human like everyone else.

“The key is consistency, not motivation. Every morning just like you get up and clean your teeth, you get up and do something for your health and wellbeing. Go for a run, do a workout DVD, go to the gym. Just be consistent.”

Michelle’s top tips to kickstart your new health plan:

1. Schedule your exercise to be a part of your daily routine

2. Have shopping lists and meals planned

3. Carry healthy snacks should you get too hungry

4. Have backup precautions such as keeping a healthy meal in the freezer in case you get caught out and don’t have time to cook
