The pair were greeted by members of the band who performed at the concert.
“I said congratulations on the bump,” Harry Styles said, adding ‘she didn’t look bumpy’.
The royal pair chatted with other band members about their touring plans before moving into the theatre.
“It’s the most nervous I think I’ve ever been in my life,” band member Liam Payne said while fellow band mate Louis Tomlinson said he feared he didn’t follow royal protocol.
“I didn’t say ma’am,” he said “I said – Hi. How are you? I’m Louis.” While his band mates joked he was off to a ‘bad start’.
The boys performed at the concert along with Bette Midler, Ed Sheeran, Simply Red and Ellie Goulding.
Duchess Catherine returned to public life recently, after suffering from severe morning sickness for two months.
This is the first time the royal pair had attended the Royal Variety performance which is usually a role reserved for the queen.
