White house wow!

The fashion world has a new star and the American rag trade has its hopes pinned firmly on the woman of the hour — Michelle Obama.

See the style of past First Ladies, including Jackie Kennedy, Hillary Clinton and more here!

Not since Jackie Kennedy wowed the world with her elegance and style, has so much anticipation surrounded the fashion of the White House. Many fashion experts and social commentators believe that the wife of the new President of the United States of America is nothing short of an icon in the making — one that might indeed rival the cult status of Jackie O.

Michelle Obama’s first day out as the official First Lady of the United States of America was nothing short of glorious. Michelle is renowned for her strong style and wowed millions of onlookers in Washington with a stunning ensemble from one of her favourite designers, Isabel Toledo in a scintillating gold-embossed coat and matching shift-style dress, with diamanté neckline, and green patent Jimmy Choo ‘Glacier’ pumps. It was a strong, modern statement in keeping with the new First Lady’s powerful style and confidence.

The stakes were, of course, high for Michelle Obama to get it right on Inauguration Day. In the throes of a global financial crisis, opting for haute-couture at her husband’s inaugural ball a la Nancy Reagan — would simply have been bad taste. Michelle Obama has shown that she’s not one to shy away from the High Street brands such as H&M and J Crew, which she wore during the election campaign, but she dazzled as the new ‘Mom-In-Chief’ yesterday.

Previous presidential inaugurations have seen some fashion crimes by the first ladies such as the UFO-style headpiece of Hillary Clinton and the blanket-coat of Laura Bush which both left their respective husbands decidedly red-faced at their inaugurations. Yet, both First Ladies redeemed themselves with Oscar de la Renta gowns at the inaugural ball.

Michelle Obama has already proven that she can walk the walk, talk the talk and certainly radiates a powerful style all of her own combining a more traditional penchant for monochromatic colours and flipped hair with an eccentric and edgier aesthetic that includes saturated colours and bright floral patterns with a more architectural construction. Michelle has also been known to veer towards more unconventional designers such as Narciso Rodriquez, Thakoon and Jason Wu.

So while we celebrate the momentous and inspirational day that will saw Barack Obama become the first black president of the US, The Weekly takes a look back at the style of some of Michelle Obama’s predecessors as she steps up to as America’s new First Lady.
