Swim queen Cate Campbell has tied the knot with her loving partner Adam Kerr in one of the most breathtakingly beautiful settings on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
Cate, 34, looked resplendent in an exquisitely designed gown created by local Sunshine Coast designer Gemma Leakey, who is renowned for using “mindful luxury materials” with a “discerning, contemporary woman in mind”.
A “grounded and earthy” wedding
According to a close source, the newlyweds, who first met on an online dating site five years ago, wanted only their closest friends and family on the guest list.
“They wanted an intimate day and not one of those huge production weddings – they both are very grounded and earthy types of people and lead a very simple life in their newly renovated beachside pad near Caloundra, so Cate was adamant it had to be understated and elegant – that was non-negotiable,” the source tells Woman’s Day.
And that it was – after viewing a number of possible wedding venues, the loved-up pair settled on Palm Creek Estate in the rural hamlet of Yandina Creek. A boutique coastal farm nestled in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Cate, according to our source, was very hands on in the planning side of things, insisting she wanted to make the most of the natural backdrop without too much fuss.
“Even the flowers by local Noosa florist Huskia Creative were wild and unstructured – not your typical bridal arrangements. Cate was adamant she wanted to support only local bridal providers,” our source confirms.
The dreamy proposal
Adam, a geologist and geotechnical engineer, is by all reports quite the romantic after getting down on one knee to propose to Cate while on a beach walk at sunrise in July last year. In an interview back in 2023, Cate maintained he had no idea who she was, telling the Sydney Morning Herald: “He maintains he never Googled me, he wasn’t star struck!”
Which almost seems impossible considering what a legend she is! When it comes to sporting royalty, the four-time Olympian who first shot to fame as a teenager, qualifying for her first Olympics in Beijing at just 16, remains one of our greatest ever sporting champions. Over her glittering career, she collected four Olympic golds, one silver, and three bronze medals, representing her country at the London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2021 Games. Although she officially hung up her goggles in June 2024, she’s now excited to be diving into this whole new chapter of her life.
While their forty-or-so guests were ferried to the venue from their nearby Coolum beach accommodation in a luxury coach, Adam and his groomsmen arrived just minutes before the bride, who opted to ride upfront in a black van!
“That’s so Cate – no frills and fuss and she was in the front seat chatting away to the driver and so relaxed with not a care in the world!” our source shares.
“Both Cate and Adam wanted to be with their family and friends the entire weekend – they chose to also stay at Coolum in the same beachfront apartments as their guests, and while most brides on the morning of their wedding are fussing about with hair and makeup – not Cate, she was posting photos of the glorious sunrise!”
The real star of the show
While younger sister Bronte, 32 – who tied the knot in February this year with great love Benfield Lainchbury – was the star bridesmaid alongside her big sister, it was Cate and Adam’s pet cocker spaniel George who is believed to have stolen the show!
Described by Cate as a “bundle of chaotic fluff”, their precious little fur baby is believed to have played quite the star role, with close friend and celebrant Jilly Rudd given the huge honour of marrying her friends, posting the day before at rehearsals, “Can’t wait to marry these two tomorrow!”.
Familiar faces on the guest list
While most of Cate’s former Australian swim team mates didn’t look like they made the guest list, one of her closest friends, former Olympian Mitch Larkin, the ex-partner to fellow swimmer Emily Seebohm, was spotted getting on the bus with new girlfriend, lawyer Sinead Cronin who he has been in a relationship with since 2019.
“Cate didn’t want a cast of thousands – she and Mitch have been friends right throughout their swimming careers, and Cate was a great support to Mitch when he went through a very bitter split with Emily.
“For now, Adam and Cate are just happy to be in the honeymoon bubble – along with George who worked out early on who’s the boss in this little family!”
