Married At First Sight star Tamara Djordjevic instantly solidified herself as a season nine villain after claiming retail workers have no “ambition”.

But in a surprising twist, it turns out the self-confessed “alpha female” actually has her own history with retail work.

An insider, who chose to remain anonymous, told Yahoo that Tamara used to work at sandwich giant Subway when she was younger.

“Tamara comes from a very working class family and her dad owned a Subway franchise in Ballarat,” the source said.

Tamara previously worked at a Subway in her hometown of Ballarat.

“She worked there when she was younger along with a few friends, mostly doing weekend shifts. She definitely knows that retail and hospitality is pretty grueling and no easy ride.”

Another source, who claims they’ve been friends with Tamara for over 10 years, told The Wash that Tamara doesn’t want to date someone content in a casual job, and is drawn to men who are “equally as driven” as she is.

“She’s a smart, friendly vibrant friend and yes she can come across spoilt but you don’t know her nature and you could say ANY of those things about anyone,” the friend told the publication.

“She knows what she wants and she isn’t afraid to voice it… she knew what she was in for [on MAFS] and we all here defending her, but she will live her best life anyway.”

Tamara’s on-screen husband Brent labelled her “spoilt and pretentious and entitled” after the pair got into a heated argument about career aspirations.

When Tamara, a “career-driven” operations manager, discovered Brent was working at a nightclub, she admitted to “judging” his job title.

Brent later explained to Tamara that he previously owned a high-flying hospitality company in Dubai, but was forced to sell up and return to Australia amid the pandemic, and now works in advertising at a nightclub.

“I thought that he was like a party boy, I think that he was younger than me. I just had an image in my head… I was completely wrong,” Tamara then said in a chat with producers.

While the two overcame the miscommunication, the MAFS bride’s desire for an “ambitious” man was brought up again at their wedding reception when Brent hypothetically asked Tamara what her opinion would be of him if he worked at a toy store.

“Well you wouldn’t be very ambitious to me,” she responded bluntly.

“I asked for someone who was ambitious. I want someone who has those same values that I have. And not because I think working in those kind of industries is bad.”

In a piece-to-camera interview, a visibly shocked Brent blasted Tamara.

“Her views on people that work in retail are horrible. She’s got a very snobbish way of looking at things. The way that she’s already judged me and anyone below her.”
