Midi dresses are here to stay and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex has known that for a while.

The chic style defined by its mid-calf hemline has taken over wardrobes across Australia and abroad, as fashionistas opt for a more classic cut.

Gone are the mini-skirts and knee-grazing styles – in come midis of all styles and silhouettes.

Ever a fashion-forward royal, Duchess Meghan has been on board with this trend for years, donning countless elegant midi styles we can’t get enough of.

From fitted, tailored looks to flowy and a-line cuts, she has this trend well and truly in the bag.

Now we’re looking back at some of her best midi moments for a little bit of style inspiration of our own.

And don’t worry, we’ve found plenty of dupes for the Duchess’ pricey frocks too.

When she joined the royal family in 2018, Duchess Meghan gave up some of her old faithful fashion staples – including mini skirts and dresses – to develop a more refined and modest style. Midi dresses played a big role in that shift, as they’re chic and on-trend while still fitting to royal fashion rules. This patterned green Self-Portrait frock she wore in April 2018 for an Invictus Games Reception at Australia House is a perfect example, paired with a tailored blazer.

Tailored dresses became a new staple for the Duchess, with bright pops of colour like this yellow Brandon Maxwell frock from July 2018 making regular appearances. She wore the $2,020 midi for the Your Commonwealth Youth Challenge reception at Marlborough House with Prince Harry, not long after their wedding.

Duchess Meghan isn’t afraid of mixing it up, opting for this $1,170 coat-style NONIE Trench Dress during her and Prince Harry’s visit to The Nelson Mandela Centenary Exhibition in London in July 2018. She’s even recycled this dress, wearing it again during her and Harry’s 2019 Africa tour. We don’t blame her, it’s a perfect neutral base for any outfit.

Belted midi styles are great for highlighting your waist, something the Duchess of Sussex knows well. She donned this denim Carolina Herrera midi with a wrap neckline for the Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup in July 2018 for an effortlessly cool look.

When Duchess Meghan stepped out in this black Givenchy gown at the Royal Academy of Arts on September 25, 2018, the world went wild with pregnancy rumours. The Duchess announced she was pregnant the following month, but we still can’t get over how elegant she looks in this $4,720 midi style with a cheeky slit up the front.

This $1,800 Karen gee dress sold out in minutes when Duchess Meghan wore it in Sydney just hours after she and Prince Harry announced they were expecting their first child. Pictured here at Admiralty House on October, 2018, the chic white frock proves that less really can be more.

Even pregnancy wouldn’t stop the duchess from rocking her favourite midi frocks, like this two-toned Roksanda ‘Athena’ gown she wore while visiting Macarthur Girls High School in October 2018. She wasn’t showing much of a bump in the $2,435 dress, but looked radiant in her pregnancy glow.

Of course, Duchess Meghan is also a champion of casual chic, as this soft blue Veronica Beard shirtdress proves. She donned this outfit while at Tupou College in Tonga in October 2018 and we still can’t get over how good it looks. The Duchess even wore the dress again for her Africa tour.

Duchess Meghan pulled out several midi styles while she and Prince Harry were on their tour of Africa in late 2019, including this flowing white Hannah Lavery dress. She wore it during a visit to the Tembisa Township, opting for a relaxed look with her hair hanging in loose waves.

One of the benefits of a wrap midi like this Mayamiko frock is (as the Duchess so kindly showed us) you can dance in it! She twirled with locals from the township of Nyanga in Cape Town and took the world’s breath away with her chic style, paired with her favourite wrap-around espadrilles.

Duchess Meghan even wore a midi dress for her final engagement as a senior royal, styling this green caped Emilia Wickstead frock with a matching fascinator. She and Prince Harry attended the Commonwealth Day Service 2020 on March 09, 2020 with the rest of the royal family for their final royal event before stepping back.
