Chilling eyewitness accounts of this afternoon’s car chase in Melbourne CBD are emerging.
Speaking to ABC News, a female eyewitness named Sian recounted the scenes that have widely been described as a “frenzied” car chase, saying that what unfolded as a male driver ploughed through Bourke Street Mall were in fact anything but.
”He just drove straight through them”
She said during an on-air interview that the man was “driving in a really determined fashion in a straight line – he just drove straight through them.”
“He was actually on the footpath – it was packed during lunchtime…”
“There was no slowing down – he was committed to it – he just mowed them down,” she said.
And when speaking about helping a “young man” who passed away at the scene; “I don’t think there was anything we could have done for him,” she explained.
Bodies were flying into the air
Another witness who only gave the name Renee told news.com.au that she saw people “fly into the air” as they were hit.
“There were three or four contorted bodies on the ground.”
Children seriously injured
The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne has confirmed on Twitter that they have received four patients from the incident, one of which is critical and three are in a serious condition.
News.com.au also published as yet unconfirmed reports of a child aged 3-4 being dragged 100 metres by the car.
Sky News spoke to a witness called Joanna who added that she saw a mother and pram hit by the car on the footpath, and the baby “thrown from the pram” where it lay “for a little while” before a police officer picked it up.
More details as we get them.
