Filming is underway on the new Wentworth spin-off, and Kate Box, who’s starring in it, has given TV WEEK a sneak peek of what to expect. The spin-off, Wentworth: Halfway Home, features the return of Kate as Lou Kelly, Katrina Milosevic as Boomer Jenkins, and Nicole da Silva as Franky Doyle.
“I’ve just been doing heaps of stunt fighting,” Kate told TV WEEK as she walked the Logie Awards red carpet with her Deadloch castmates Madeleine Sami and Nina Oyama. “And I’m really old now, so a lot of those stunts are just me rolling around on the floor. But no, it’s going great.”
Wentworth: Halfway Home is set in the world outside prison, with former inmates trying to make a new start. As well as Kate, Katrina and Nicole, the show features new cast members, including actress/model/singer/netballer Chenile Chandler, and Alex King, who was in action movie War Machine with Dennis Quaid and Jai Courtney.
“All the new cast are brilliant,” Kate says. “It’s looking incredibly fun and incredibly new and funny. It’s good.”
In Deadloch, Kate plays Senior Sergeant Dulcie Collins, while Madeleine plays Detective Eddie Redcliffe. Both Kate and Madeleine were nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy at the Logies, while Deadloch was nominated for Best Scripted Comedy Program. It was the show’s second season, with the action moving from Tasmania to Darwin.
“I think it was nice to go back to Eddie’s hometown, to actually go, ‘Oh, that’s where that crazy comes from,’” Kate says. “I think by the end of the first season, the characters had got under people’s skin and they just wanted to check in.”
So will there be a third season?
“No one knows,” Kate says.
“It’s a mystery,” Nina adds.
And where could season three be set, following on from Tasmania and Darwin?
“Antarctica,” Madeleine suggests.
“Rocket ship,” Kate offers.
