Sam Pang has won the Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Personality on Australian TV!
In a stunning conclusion to the 66th TV WEEK Logie Awards, which was held in the ballroom of The Star in Sydney, the comedian and presenter took to the stage to accept the award. Humbled and slightly shocked, he accepted the prestigious award with his trademark wit and humour.
“I’m truly honoured,” Sam told TV WEEK just seconds after accepting the TV WEEK Gold Logie Award.
“If you grow up watching the Logies or watching Australian television, in the, you know, the old ways that it was being viewed, the Logies were the pinnacle, and I still think they’re a wonderful acknowledgment and a celebration of our industry. The best of the best.”
Sam’s success story
While he’s never been one to promote himself, it could be exactly why he won. With his everyman perspective and rising success, Sam has become a nationwide treasure.
From his weekly appearance on Have You Been Paying Attention on 10 and The Front Bar on Channel Seven, to hosting his own talk show Sam Pang Tonight and acting in comedy series Ground Up – not to mention the three years he hosted the TV WEEK Logie Awards – it seems audiences can’t get enough.
With his quick wit, he jokingly says, “it’s too many” shows on the box. But he’s proud to be part of them.
The future is funny
Sam is looking forward to another season of Sam Pang Tonight, which will roll out later this year.
“We purposely tried not to build the show [Sam Pang Tonight] around the guests too much. We know how far away Australia is and how difficult it can be to get them. It also depends on who’s in town,” he says. “So, there’s a lot of comedy in other segments and usually the guest announcer is a friend of mine. It’s so funny to have them on.”
After making his debut as a lead actor in Ground Up earlier this year, Sam is open to doing more.
“It was a wonderful opportunity to work with [co-creators] Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope,” Sam says of the ABC sport comedy. “They were really supportive and I was happy to do something new.”
For now, however, it’s all about a celebration as he soaks in a golden moment.
“It’s genuinely thrilling,” he says.
