Our favourite pastime is watching what the royals are wearing and most of the time their elegance and beauty completely blows us away… but every now and then some outfits are seriously wacky and pompously posh. After all, with a family lineage drenched in tradition and history the royals will often rock historical clothes from yesteryear.

And Princesses can’t always play it safe, so we’ve compiled a list of the most colourful and crazy royal outfits of all time. From the famously fab hats to the ceremonial robes at Trooping the Colour – these folks don’t do anything by halves.

Whether it’s Sarah Ferguson in an OTT silk number or Camilla, The Duchess of York looking retro in plaid – the royals really know how to make a mark in the style stakes.

We’ve taken a horse-drawn carriage down memory lane to dig up some of the most outlandish outfits we’ve ever seen.

The year was 1987, Madonna was the Queen of music and Princess Anne and the Duchess of York were the reigning monarchs of colour clashing.

Princess Anne knows how to turn heads: The Queen’s only daughter looked very eye-catching in this yellow and purple number (L) in 2010 and at 1987’s Ascot (R) it was all about the big shoulder pads and statement sleeves.

Princess Anne might never be Queen, but to us she’ll always be the sovereign of seriously edgy outfits. How fierce is that fuchsia pink hat? We’re getting some serious Mad Hatter vibes.

You know what they say, you can never wear too much silk, isn’t that right Sarah Ferguson?

Princess Eugenie and Beatrice often cop a lot of the royal heat when it comes to fashion faux pas, but their daring gowns and eye-catching head-wear consistently give us life!

These girls might be laughing at Camilla’s fabulously retro plaid outfit now, but one day she’ll be Queen and then they’ll be sorry!

Queen Margrethe of Denmark certainly knows how to dress like a royal. That fur coat (R) wreaks of opulence. Princess Mary better pick up her poofy dress game if she wants to be Denmark’s Queen one day.

Prince William

Can you see under that, Wills? The Duke of Cambridge makes it known that one day he’ll be King in this royally impressive number at this year’s Trooping the Colour.

Relationship goals! The Queen and her man Prince Philip manage to find the balance between super cute couple and powerful Monarchs – even with feathers coming out of their hat! Here, the long-time lovers don their ceremonial gowns at the Thistle Service for the installation of Prince William as a Knight of the Thistle at St. Giles Cathedral in 2012 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Just fasciniating! She’ll be Queen one day, but for now The Duchess of Cambridge is happy being the Her Royal Hotness. Despite odd head-wear, Catherine and Camilla looked like the future sovereigns they will become at Trooping The Colour this year.

Nothing like a feather or two to complete a look, and Prince Will and his Aunt Princess Anne are really owning it at the Thistle Service in Scotland in 2012.

Here the Queen can be seen dashing down to Tescos to pick up a loaf of bread for cucumber sandwiches… not really, but have your ever seen a more decadently Royal photo in your life? #BowDown
