It felt like watching Pete Murray’s elbow dislocate all over again when Locky Gilbert left Barry Hall with a brutal rib injury on SAS Australia tonight.

The two men went head-to-head in a vicious hand-to-hand combat challenge and it looked like the pair were an even match.

Despite their similar size, Locky managed to throw Barry from the makeshift ring in a matter of moments; that’s when the former AFL star felt his rib pop out of place.

Battling through excruciating pain, Barry stayed quiet about his injury as he returned to the ring for two more rounds with former Survivor star Locky.

But Barry simply couldn’t best him in the state he was in and it was clear his rib had him in a world of pain as he returned to the other recruits.

“Popped a rib out,” he told them quietly, grimacing through the agony.

Speaking to producers, Barry confessed that it would be a serious blow if he had to medically withdraw from the course.

“I’d be devastated if my body let me down. If it came down to an injury that would be shattering for me,” he said.

But the punishment wasn’t over yet, as the DS announced all of the recruits would be returning to the ring for a last-man-standing show down.

Unsurprisingly, Barry was the first to fall, staggering out of the ring with his hand pressed to his rib while Locky went on to win the challenge.

Back at base camp, the full extent of Barry’s injury left his fellow recruits horrified – and amazed that he had continued with the challenge while in that condition.

Confessing he was not in a good way, the former sport star needed help to even take his shirt off and it was clear he was in no condition to continue the course.

Still, it was difficult for Barry to concede defeat and hand in his number to DS Ant Middleton.

“I desperately want to finish it [the course], I’m loving it,” he told the rest of the recruits, before leaving base camp to see Ant.

“I would’ve loved to have completed it, but stuff happens doesn’t it,” Barry told him, but Ant reminded the AFL great he had achieved incredible things on the course.

Moments later, Barry was allowed to call his wife and kids at home, Lauren Hall’s face lighting up the screen as her husband was overcome with emotion.

Though the injury was brutal, there was a silver lining for Barry – it meant he was able to get home in time for Lauren to welcome their third child, a boy named Samson.

He joined the couple’s two elder sons, Miller and Houston, rounding out the beautiful family of three.
