200 dead in Russian plane crash

More than 200 people were killed in the crash.

A Russian plane that came down over Sinai over the weekend broke up in mid-air, heightening the possibility that a bomb had been placed on board.

The BBC says an investigation into the cause of the crash will take months, however.

More than 200 people were killed when the plane, travelling from the Egyptian tourist resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh to St Petersburg in Russia, came down.

Terror group ISIS has claimed that it took the plane down with a missile but experts have denied that, saying the plane broke up at 33,000 feet, which is far too high for a surface-to-air missile.

Viktor Sorochenko, a senior official with Russia’s Interstate Aviation Committee is quoted as saying: “The disintegration happened in the air and the fragments are strewn over a large area.”

Meanwhile, three airlines – Emirates, Air France-KLM and Lufthansa – have decided not to fly over the Sinai Peninsula until more information is available.
