It’s been 33 years since Simon Baker last won a Logie. Back then, Simon was awarded the gong for Most Popular New Talent for playing constable Sam Farrell in frothy soap, E Street.
“Bert Newton gave (the Logie) to me,” Simon, 57, recalls to TV WEEK.
“Tom Jones did a duet with John Farnham and sang ‘It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)’. That’s about all I remember.”
This time, Simon won Best Supporting Actor in a Drama for his portrayal of publican Keith Mulvaney in the harrowing The Narrow Road to the Deep North.
“I was kind of nervous as a cat for some reason,” Simon says of accepting his award on stage this year, “because I really wasn’t expecting it.”
He says he’s been nominated for several awards over the years and not won, “so I got to the point of not preparing and expecting that someone else would win”.
Simon was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2009 and a Golden Globe Award in 2010 for the US series, The Mentalist.
These days, he’s philosophical about receiving awards.
“If the show that I do or the film that I do gets an audience and acknowledgement from an audience, then that’s a win for me,” he says. “That feels special. I just want to continue winning in that way.”
