It’s known around the world as ‘Fashion’s Biggest Night’, so it’s no wonder that some of our favourite red carpet looks of all time have come from the Met Gala.

Hosted in New York on the first Monday in May every year (unless a global pandemic puts things on hold), the annual fundraising event benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

But it’s the fashion, not the fundraising, that makes headlines every year as stars dress up to the nines, following annual themes like “Camp: Notes on Fashion” and “Punk: Chaos to Couture”.

Though the gala is packed to the brim with celebrity attendees each year, only a few Australians have ever been invited to walk its famous red carpet.

Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman can count themselves among the lucky few Aussie to attend the event through the years and they made sure to do it in style.

With the 2022 Met Gala underway, we’re strolling down memory lane to relive some Aussie fashion hits and misses in years gone by – as well as some from this year.

Keep scrolling to see all the looks that had us smitten – and a few that had us raising our eyebrows.

HIT: Miranda Kerr, 2022.

We’re not sure how this gown fits the “Gilded Glamour” theme, but Miranda looks so divine we have to admit it’s a hit anyway.

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness, 2022.

Sorry to one of Australia’s golden couples, but we would have loved to have seen something more exciting from them!

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Troye Sivan in Joseph Altuzarra, 20121.

It’s a bit weird and we’re not sure how this look fits with the theme of “In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion”.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Catherine Martin and Baz Luhrmann, 2019.

These outfits were so on-theme they hurt, so we have to admit they’re hits.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Liam Hemsworth, 2019.

Aussie Liam looks great in all-black and then-wife Miley Cyrus was on-theme so it’s a win for the couple, who split later that year.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Elizabeth Debicki in Salvatore Ferragamo, 2019.

The theme was “Celebrating Camp: Notes on Fashion” and Elizabeth was a hit in this pink number.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Troye Sivan in Valentino, 2018.

Not only does the singer (left) look great, he spent the night hanging out with fashionable stars like Ariana Grande, Hailey Baldwin, and Shawn Mendes, so he’s clearly a hit.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Naomi Watts in Michael Kors, 2018.

She looks like something straight out of a church (but make it fashionable). Hit!

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Ruby Rose in Tommy Hilfiger, 2018.

It’s on-theme, but sadly this outfit reads more ‘Halloween costume’ than ‘Met Gala look’ – miss.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, 2018.

They basically look like Hugh and Deborra if they amped their looks up a notch, so it’s a hit.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Deborra-Lee Furness and Hugh Jackman, 2018.

The outfits are a bit simple, but at least they’re kind of sticking to the theme of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination”. It’s a win for the Aussie golden couple!

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Ruby Rose in Burberry, 2017.

The texture makes this dress a hit, as does Ruby’s tall stature and blunt haircut.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Naomi Watts in Stella McCartney, 2017.

The black column dress alone may have been a miss, but the glittering mesh through the neck makes this dress a huge hit.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Rose Byrne in Ralph Lauren, 2017.

The colour, the tulle, the plunging neckline – it all looks amazing and Rose’s curly locks set it off perfectly in this hit outfit.

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness, 2017.

We love these two, but between Hugh’s boring suit and Deborra’s confronting shoes/socks/tights combo, we have to admit this one’s a miss.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Miranda Kerr in Oscar de la Renta, 2017.

This dress for the “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” theme was simple and elegant and Miranda wore it perfectly – hit.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Elizabeth Debicki in Prada, 2016.

Okay, hear us out. The dress may not be on theme but Elizabeth looks so good in it anyway, we had to make it a hit.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Rose Byrne in Ralph Lauren, 2016.

This one was a near miss, but it ties into the theme and Rose is always beuatiful, so we think it’s a hit.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen, 2016.

On theme? Check. Beautiful design? Check. Fits Nicole like a glove? Check! This one is a hit.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Margot Robbie in Calvin Klein, 2016.

This is the stunning actress we know and love! What a hit for Margot.

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Miranda Kerr in Louis Vuitton, 2016.

This outfit had a lot going on despite not really fitting the theme, and the ruffle on the hemline seems so out of place. Miss!

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Naomi Watts in Burberry, 2016.

The theme was “Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology” and we think Naomi nailed it. Hit!

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Rose Byrne in Calvin Klein, 2015.

Her gown fit the theme and this red hue looked incredible on Rose’s complextion, so this one is a hit.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Miranda Kerr in Louis Vuitton, 2015.

It may be a little off the “China: Through The Looking Glass” theme, but Miranda’s figure makes this look a huge hit.

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Margot Robbie in Prada, 2014.

We’re not sold on this outfit, even though Margot’s the one wearing it. Sorry, it’s a miss.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Kylie Minogue in Marchesa, 2014.

This gown looked simply divine on Kylie and we love her little clutch – it’s a win.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Naomi Watts in Givenchy, 2014.

Do we even need to say anything? This dress was a total hit.

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness, 2014.

Their outfits may have suited the “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” but Deborra’s is still sadly a miss.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Miranda Kerr in Michael Kors, 2013.

This is more like it! Full marks to supermodel Miranda in this cut-out hit.

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Kylie Minogue in Marchesa, 2013.

Does this outfit scream “Punk: Chaos to Coutoure”? Sadly no, so Kylie gets a miss.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen, 2012.

The theme was “Schiaparelli And Prada: Impossible Conversations” but Cate’s McQueen gown was still a huge hit.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Miranda Kerr in Marchesa, 2011.

This white swan-style frock was a total hit for Miranda, who looked divine on then-husband Orlando Bloom’s arm.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Isla Fisher in Tory Burch, 2011.

Isla had a hit for her one and only Met Gala appearance, back when the theme was “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty”.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Naomi Watts in Stella McCartney, 2010.

It’s a gorgeous frock and the colour looks divine on Naomi, and though it doesn’t have much to do with the “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity” theme, this dress was still a hit.

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Miranda Kerr in Jil Sanders, 2009.

The theme was “The Model As Muse” but Miranda still missed in this number – though she had incredible looks to come.

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Naomi Watts in Mugler, 2008.

This frock was a hit for Naomi and fit the “Superheroes: Fashion And Fantasy” theme perfectly.

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Cate Blanchett in Balenciaga, 2007.

The theme was “Poiret: King Of Fashion” but this dress was sadly a miss for Cate.

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Elle Macpherson in Calvin Klein, 2005.

This dress was branded a miss by the media, but Elle adored it. She once told People: “My favorite red carpet moment is the acid-green, strapless luminescent dress with flip flops that I wore to a Met Gala.”

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Sara O’Hare, 2004.

It’s not really on theme, but this all-white outfit looks divine on the Aussie model so we’re calling it a hit.

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Naomi Watts, 2004.

Sorry Naomi, we know you did your best but this outfit is a bit of a miss.

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Hugh Jackman and wife Deborra-Lee Furness, 2004.

We love them, but these outfits are misses for ignoring the “Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century” theme. Plus, who wears all-black to the Met Gala?

(Image: Getty)

HIT: Nicole Kidman in Tom Ford, 2003.

This is a big hit! Mere weeks after winning her Oscar, The Hours actress and her dress totally matched the “Goddess” theme.

(Image: Getty)

MISS: Elle Macpherson, 2001.

This has to be a miss because it didn’t stick to the theme, which was “Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years”.
