The full list of nominees for the 2020 Golden Globe Awards has been unveiled, and Australian stars have come out on top!

Margot Robbie, who famously got her start on Aussie soap Neighbours has been nominated for her role as Kayla Pospisil in Bombshell in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture.

Her Bombshell co-star Nicole Kidman is also nominated, for her role as Celeste Wright in Big Little Lies. After first picking up the award in 2018, here’s hoping Nicole can pull off a second win in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama category.

Cate Blanchett has been nominated for her role in Where’d You Go, Bernadette, in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

For her role as Detective Grace Rasmussen in Netflix drama Unbelievable, Toni Collette has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.

Finally, Russell Crowe has picked up a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for his portrayal of Fox News boss Roger Ailes in the TV miniseries The Loudest Voice.

Outside of our Aussie stars, the nominees list naturally includes some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

All three Green sisters from Friends have been nominated, which will see them stage a mini reunion at the ceremony. Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon have been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama for their roles in Apple TV’s The Morning Show, while Christina Applegate has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for her role in the dark comedy Dead To Me.

Netflix earned 34 nominations across 17 different film categories and 17 different television shows, including five for the recently released Martin Scorsese mob drama The Irishman.

Meryl Streep picked up her 31st Golden Globe nomination, this time for her role in the second season of Big Little Lies.

Major upsets included the snubbing of Ava DuVernay’s Netflix series When They See Us, which received 12 nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards earlier this year. Other surprising omissions from the nominees list were Julia Louis Dreyfus for Veep, Alex Borstein for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Regina King for Watchmen and Linda Cardellini for Dead to Me.

Once again, no female directors were nominated in the Best Director for a Motion Picture category – and yes, this is a snub. Especially considering Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers, Marielle Heller’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart have ALL been nominated in multiple other categories.

Historically, only one woman has ever won in the category – shout out to Barbra Streisand – and the last female nominee was Ava DuVernay in 2015.

This year the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will honour Tom Hanks with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and Ellen DeGeneres will receive the Carol Burnett Award.

The 2020 Golden Globes will take place on Monday, January 6th, at the Beverly Hills Hilton in Los Angeles. The awards show will once again be hosted by comedian and known pot-stirrer Ricky Gervais (we can’t wait).
