Barely a week ago, Master Archie Harrison, the son of Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry, turned one.

While we were quite content after our eyeballs were treated to a brand-new video of the royal toddler being read a book by mum Meghan as Prince Harry filmed (seriously, we’re still not over those first words…), fans have now been given another insight into Archie’s special day.

And despite the lockdown restrictions in their new home of Los Angeles amid the COVID-19 pandemic, they certainly didn’t let that stop them from having a proper celebration.

In a new report from PEOPLE, Meghan got busy in the kitchen to make her son a smash cake – a baking delight commonly used at toddlers’ first birthday parties where said toddler is given the opportunity to “smash” it up.

And no, it often doesn’t get eaten – rather, it’s often used to simply generate a glorious photo opportunity, which we’re quite sure Meghan and Archie managed.

Alongside the cake, Prince Harry was in charge of festive decor, according to a source who spoke to the publication.

“Meghan made the cake — strawberries and cream,” they revealed.

“And Harry helped with decorations and blew up balloons.”

It’s also understood Harry and Meghan arranged a number of video calls with their nearest and dearest who wished the young royal a happy birthday virtually.

It’s unsurprising to see the Sussexes hop well aboard the video call train – along with other key members of the royal family, they themselves have done their own batch of video calls to show support and shine a light on various initiatives that are helping those who need it amidst the pandemic.

That said, we’re sure between all the smash cake baking, birthday celebrating and settling into their new home, a fair few calls back to Harry’s family in the UK would definitely be on the agenda.

A couple of candid family video calls were also in order for the special day.

And despite technically being a family of three, Harry and Meghan had two more guests along to Archie’s celebrations that didn’t quite break any isolation rules as such.

Indeed the two family dogs, Meghan’s original furry pal Guy the beagle as well as her black labrador that she and Harry adopted in 2018.

According to the source, Archie is “best friends” with both pups.

“They make him laugh and are gentle with him.”

A few days following Archie’s birthday, Meghan had a celebration of her own to mark – Mother’s Day.

As the special occasion was marked across the US, it is understood the royals had a very special visitor to help her celebrate – her mum Doria Ragland.

With two generations of mum’s and a smash cake extravaganza, it seems like the Sussexes had quite the eventful week.
