In one of the largest congregations of tiaras, crowns and royal sashes since Queen Elizabeth cleaned out her wardrobe, Queen Margrethe’s 75th birthday celebrations were awash with aristocrats.
The gala, which was held Christiansborg Palace in Denmark on the eve of Her Majesty’s big day, included guests from no fewer than seven monarchies.
In what was probably a real life Disney film, the party was attended by (deep breath) Queen Anne-Marie and King Constantine of Greece, Queen Silvia and King Carl Gustaf of Sweden, King Harald of Norway, Crown Princess Mary and Prince Frederik of Denmark, Princess Marie and Prince Joachim of Denmark, Queen Letizia and King Felipe of Spain, Queen Mathilde and King Phillipe of Belgium, Queen Maxima and King Willem Alexander of the Netherlands and, of course, the party girl herself, Queen Margarethe II of Denmark.
With every Princess and Queen wearing a tiara, brooch, necklace, ring and bracelet, and the Royal Jewels on display, we’re still not sure if this was a birthday party, or competitive bling wearing.
Mary’s in-laws, Princess Marie and Prince Joachim of Denmark, made a dashing impression in blue. Princess Marie wore blue lace with a diamond tiara.
King and Queen of the Belgians, Queen Mathilde and King Phillipe’s attempt to match was not as tightly co-ordinated. Mathilde wore hot pink, whilst Phillipe wore standard blue.
King Harald of Norway didn’t look chuffed to be there.
Princess Mary and Prince Frederik attended in style. Mary took a leaf out of Duchess Kate’s book and recycled her gown from Queen Beatrix’s abdication dinner.
Wearing her favourite Danish ruby parure tiara and came a respectable 3rd in the Biggest Tiara Awards.
Queen Anne-Marie of Greece came 2nd with her emerald and diamond tiara, with matching necklace and cross brooch. So close.
She attended with husband, King Constantine.
The top award goes to this absolute sparkler on Queen Silvia of Sweden, The Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure, which is made up of 11 sapphires and surrounding diamonds.
She, understandably, outshined her husband, King Carl Gustaf.
Queen Maxima gets an honourable mention, for her’s is quite small but made up of large diamonds. Her black lace and feather fringe dress is also quite chic.
Queen Letizia unfortunately comes last, with her pearl and diamond diadem.
The President of Iceland Olafur Ragnar Grimsson’s wife, Dorrit Moussaieff, wasn’t even in the running, but her floral embroidered-fringe skirt-opera gloves-corset combo is a winner in itself.
And lastly, the birthday girl! Queen Margrethe decided to forgo the tiara for a beautiful bright red gown. Happy birthday!
