All eyes have once again been on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as they embark on their new life in the UK, just six years after “stepping back” as senior members of the Royal Family and embarking on their US adventure.
After raising their children, Archie 7, and Lilibet, 5, in Montecito since mid-2020, the couple announced they’ll be moving back to the UK and enrolling their kids in school there.
It was a sudden backflip from Harry’s five-day UK tour in July where Meghan and the kids pulled out last-minute due to security concerns.
$12,000 per hour private plane raises eyebrows
As they descended on the UK last week, the pair raised eyebrows as it was reported they used a private plane to transport their family and dogs from LA, with the jet costing $12,000 per hour.
While privacy and security are a high priority for the family, financial pressures have been looming, particularly after Harry’s high-profile privacy lawsuit against Associated Newspapers Limited was dismissed, leaving Harry and the other claimants a reported legal bill nearing £35 million.
Though Meghan and Harry’s initial departure from Britain – labelled Megxit – saw the couple navigate substantial commercial windfalls including a reported $100 million partnership with Netflix, rumours have persistently followed that the money is drying up – which makes their private plane blowout and latest move all the more confusing.
‘Running on a limited budget’
“Meghan and Harry are running on a very limited budget so it’s a shock to see them blowing $120k on a private jet using the dogs as an excuse,” an insider tells Woman’s Day.
“The kids schooling alone is over $60k a year and the house they’re renting is around $75k a month and that’s without the renovations Meghan’s planning.”
The insider says there’s no doubt that someone is helping them out – but who that someone is, is yet to be revealed.
“Meghan’s bought a whole new wardrobe for each of them, but the big question is how on earth they’re able to afford it? Especially after Harry’s had to find millions in legal fees after losing his court case,” they claim.
“Harry and Meghan are paranoid about anyone trying to claim they’re blagging freebies but there’s no doubt someone’s helping them out. Whether it’s the King or Harry’s Uncle Charlie, the math doesn’t add up unless they have some kind of sponsor.”
While we’re yet to see any photos or appearances from the pair themselves, Meghan recently posted an update on her lifestyle brand As Ever, hinting at change while promoting a new champagne. “A new chapter to celebrate,” she captioned the post.
“If Harry and Meghan are somehow funding this all themselves, it’s clear they’re going all in,” the royal insider concludes. “Even if they decide to return, having a year next to Grandpa and a chance to reopen their security protocols can only be a good thing.”
