As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle return to UK soil, one big problem still appears to be unsolved – and it’s not the friction between Harry and his brother Prince William.
Less than a week into his return home, Harry’s concern has once again turned to security issues, with a palace insider revealing that the Duke of Sussex and his family are still being targeted by worrying threats to their safety.
‘Very real threats’
Royal editor Chris Ship appeared on the Today show this morning, telling Tom Steinfort and Sam Armytage that security is Harry’s “biggest concern”.
“The only thing he’s got to combat any attack is the phone number of a police liaison officer that he can call when he’s in trouble. He does have very real threats against him, and one of those threats was passed to him by the FBI,” Chris said.
The fact that the FBI was the one to pass on the information and not the British authorities has reportedly left Harry feeling concerned and raising the issue with the committee that decides what level of security famous public figures have in Britain, including MPs, politicians, and other members of the Royal family.
“Harry’s now saying to them, ‘I’m living here with my family. They’re going to school here, we’re doing the school run. Surely you must look at this again, and look at my security once again now that there’s all these threats are out there’,” Chris said.
‘He assumes someone is watching’
The security risk comes off the back of the drama of Harry’s visit to the UK in July, with Meghan and their kids, Archie and Lilibet, deciding not to join Harry for the full five-day UK tour due to fears for their safety.
A confidential security assessment prepared by a private US security company hired by Harry and Meghan painted an alarming picture of the risks facing the prince, alleging multiple credible threats against his safety, with the majority of them reportedly originating in Britain.
The document stated that Prince Harry faces six terrorist plots against him, with five originating within the UK. ITV first reported the confidential files, and according to GB News, one of the threats is an al-Qaeda document specifically calling for Harry’s assassination.
“Security isn’t just important to him anymore, it’s an obsession,” one source told journalist Rob Shuter at the time, saying Harry is always prepared for the “worst-case” scenario. “He assumes someone is watching, someone is listening, or someone knows where he is.”
As Harry, Meghan and their kids settle back into the UK, it’s yet to be settled what level of security they’ll receive as they embark on their next chapter – or whether King Charles will step in to help.
