Although not everyone has what it takes to become a professional psychic medium, we are all capable of developing our intuition and psychic abilities.
We spoke to psychic astrologer Patsy Bennett, who has been in the industry for 23 years, to get her top tips to develop your own sixth sense.
"The minute you decide to develop your skills, you'll be able to get more out of life," said Patsy.
I held my friend's palm in my hand and closed my eyes.
At 12 years old, I'd often volunteer to read palms on our lunch break.
I'd stare down at the lines of their hands, but most importantly, I'd listen to what my intuition was telling me.
From an early age, I'd always had interest in palm reading and tarot cards. My great aunt was a tarot reader and my father had many spiritual books on palm reading and tarot.
One day, I was walking out of my room into the hallway when I saw an unbelievable sight.Silently galloping over the hardwood floors was my grandfather perched on a white horse! I watched in awe as he rode down the corridor.
Not daring to believe it, I blinked my eyes ... he was still there!
My grandfather had passed away months earlier but I wasn't frightened.
He seemed content and in control.
From then on, I often saw people who had passed over.
When I was 18 years old, I went to see an astrologer.
"I can tell you're a medium," she said.
I went on to study astrology while developing my psychic skills.
Today, I'm an author and psychic medium who aims to help empower and give direction to those who seek it.
You're driving home from work and you're sitting at an intersection.
Usually you turn left to go on the highway, but today, you get a little niggling feeling in your gut telling you to take the scenic route home.
You turn right and drive home without a second thought.Later, you learn that there had been an accident on the highway, causing a huge traffic jam.
It's easy to brush aside our gut feelings and let logic take control. But our gut feelings are often our intuition trying to warn us or tell us something.
The first step to developing your psychic abilities is to trust your first impression or gut.
Logic is important in all decisions, but sometimes you can't explain that little voice telling you something.
The secret to developing your intuition is being able to have a clear, calm mind. Patsy recommends learning deep-breathing exercises and trying meditation.
Deep breathing is beneficial to help you calm anxiety, your nervous system and create a more intimate connection with your own mind.
You can develop these skills by following guided meditation, attending yoga classes or just sitting peacefully with your eyes shut.
Focus on your breath going in and out.
When a thought comes into your head, acknowledge it, then bring the focus back to your breathing.
Afterwards, you will feel calmer and find it easier to accept intuitive thoughts that filter into your mind.
Alcohol and drugs can make you feel good, but they can be roadblocks if you want to work on your psychic ability.
Many people use these substances to drown out or numb what they're really feeling.
If you're trying to open up your skills and truly listen to your intuition, a few glasses of wine can make it hard for you to keep a clear mind and connect with yourself.
"Alcohol and drugs are the best way to obliterate your abilities," said Patsy.
So if you want to hone your awareness, opt for a mocktail.
With horror movies and mystical TV shows populating our screens, it's no wonder there's a lot of fear and negativity surrounding psychic abilities.
Many people harbour fear when they first decide to experiment with their intuition, but Patsy says it's just holding you back.
"When you fear something, your fear can prevent you from taking positive action.
By letting go of fear, you can open yourself up to more psychic experiences," explained Patsy.
If you ever feel scared, Patsy suggests visualising that you're sitting in a bubble of white light, an area of pure positivity.
If you feel drawn to crystals and would like protection while you meditate, Patsy recommends the darker coloured crystals such as black tourmaline and black obsidian for reducing anxiety and fear.
Developing your psychic abilities may be exciting and open your eyes to another side of the world, but it's important to stay grounded and continue on with your daily activities.
If you feel like you're drifting or are a bit disorientated, Patsy suggests visualising your feet in the mud or grass. Better yet, if you can, go for a walk in nature barefoot.
If you have a fleeting thought that came out of nowhere, or feel suddenly sad, or smell something that has no explanation, write it down.
Patsy says that paying attention to how these things come to you is important.
If there's a pattern in the way you're receiving messages, Patsy suggests that you focus on that skill to develop it.
After honing your skills, Patsy encourages you to test them in everyday life.
If you hear your phone ring or there's a knock on the door, let your intuition tell you who it is.Pay attention to the little thoughts that come and go, and when you notice yourself listening to your intuition, give yourself a pat on the back.
DID YOU KNOW?
Psychic abilities come in many forms, but they can be broken down into different categories.
Most people are stronger in one or two than others.
They are referred to as the Clairsenses.
The most common of the experiences are clairvoyance, clairaudience and clairsentience.
Clairvoyance is the most well-known of the five. People who are clairvoyant experience vivid dreams, visions, auras and sometimes see spirits. Clairaudience means clear hearing.
People with this ability can hear things that aren't always present.
Clairsentience is when you can feel the presence of spirits around you.
