Police are currently negotiating with him

A man armed with a meat cleaver has barricaded himself inside a Melbourne city center restaurant.

Victorian police are currently trying to negotiate with him as he throws things at them from the restaurant, reports 9News.

The man charged at police with the cleaver on Tuesday afternoon before they tried to subdue him with capsicum spray.

He escaped into the Little Ipoh restaurant on Latrobe St and barricaded himself inside.

Traffic is currently blocked off in the city on Latrobe St between Queen and Elizabeth streets.
