13-year-old girl dies trying to save her brother

A tragic reminder how dangerous the ocean can be.

A 13-year old girl has drowned trying to save her younger brother who was struggling in the rough seas in Dalyston, Victoria.

The 11-year-old boy and his sister were swimming at about 8pm at Williamson’s Beach on Thursday when the waves became rough.

The sister and her father went to help him, but soon the girl got into trouble as well. She was pulled out of the water unconscious, and despite her family, ambulance paramedics and the police trying to save her, she did not survive.

The boy was taken to Monash Medical Centre and was treated for minor injuries.

The family had gone to Dalyston on a family trip.

Williamsons Beach is unpatrolled and according to the BeachSafe website, is ‘extremely hazardous’.
