Fatal Sydney house fire: Man charged with murder after wife’s body found

A man has been charged after his wife died in a fire which tore through the family’s western Sydney home where the couple’s two children had been asleep.

Abdul Barati, 43, and the his two sons, aged 9 and 6, escaped serious injury when their Guildford home caught fire in the early hours of Tuesday, October 18. His wife and mother of the boys, 30-year-old Adel Barati, did not make it out.

A 43-year-old man was taken to Merrylands Police Station for questioning, where he has since been charged. The boys were being cared for by family members.

He was refused bail and will appear in Fairfield Local Court today (Wednesday).

Reports claim that neighbours allegedly heard a woman’s screams as the fire ripped through the home. But when firefighters arrived at the Clement Street St house, there was nothing they could do to save Ms Barati.

The couple are believed to be duel Afghan-Australian citizens.
