A suicide bomber struck at Belgium’s Brussels airport, with shots fired before two blasts were heard near the American Airlines check-in desk, according to local media.

The airport went into immediate lockdown with all flights grounded and passengers were seen fleeing the airport at 8am local time.

Belgian media are reporting at least 13 people have died in the airport explosions, according to BBC.

An hour later, another explosion took place at Maalbek metro train station, in the city’s center which is estimated to have killed 10.

The metro attack was just 500 metres away from the European Commission when has now gone into lock down.

All roads in the city have been closed and all rail networks shutdown. The French-Belgian borders have been closed.

In the wake of the attacks the Belgium Interior minister has raised the terror alert level to the maximum warning and other European nations, including Britain are also beefing up security at their airports.

British PM David Cameron will hold a meeting of the government’s emergency COBRA committee on Tuesday morning – UK time – to discuss how to proceed.
