Donald Trump’s asked Congress to investigate Barack Obama over wiretapping

Trump made some explosive (and so far unsubstantiated) claims about his predecessor over the weekend.

Donald Trump has accused Barack Obama of illegally wiretapping his home in Trump Tower during the 2016 election campaign.

The serious claims were made on Twitter, the POTUS posting a series of accusations against Obama.

He’s now calling for Congress to investigate, despite there being no evidence to support his claims.

“Reports concerning potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election are very troubling,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer said in a statement.

Trump “is requesting that as part of their investigation into Russian activity, the congressional intelligence committees exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016,” Spicer said.

He said the White House would make no further comment “until such oversight is conducted”. Which sounds like damage control to us.

A spokesman for Mr Obama said on Saturday that Mr Trump’s claims were “simply false”.

More as we get it.
