If you’ve been lurking within the world of foodtok (read: food TikTok) recently, then you may have seen the butter board phenomenon.

And, if you haven’t… or you’re just as confused as we were when this first graced our screens – let us explain.

Keep scrolling to find out what butter boards are, why they’re trending and how to make one at home.

What are butter boards?

A butter board: swirls of softened butter topped with deliciously colourful toppings paired with freshly cut bread.

Coined the new charcuterie board by many food creators on the platform, a butter board was first brought to our attention by the creator Justine Doiron (@justine_snacks) when she posted a TikTok of her jaw-dropping (and easy) butter board recipe, gaining 7.8 million views in just five days.

Simply put, we (and the rest of TikTok) are obsessed. Move over morsels of cheese and cured meats (although, charcuterie boards will always hold a very special place in our hearts), butter boards have entered the chat.

What toppings should I use on my butter board?

If there was a perfect time to say “the sky’s the limit”, it’s now. You can top your butter board with practically anything you want.

Dollop some fruit preserve, sprinkle crushed nuts for some crunch, spoon some honey for a hint of sweetness, coarse sea salt, a drizzle of EVOO and top with fresh berries and edible flowers for some colour and… chef’s kiss.

How to make a butter board

It’s quick and easy to whip up your own DIY butter board for your next event or gatherine (or just to enjoy yourself on a Friday afternoon). Follow the steps below:

  • Start with softened butter – you can use salted or unsalted, but it’s best to use unsalted if you’re adding salty toppings.

  • Use a butter knife to spread the butter over your board in wide strokes or swirls

  • Prepare your toppings and arrange them as desired on top of the butter

And that’s it! All that’s left for you to do is toast some bread or grab a fresh loaf and enjoy.

Could this look any tastier?
