The one, very important reason why you should eat cauliflower tonight

Step aside quinoa, this fluffy little tree might just save some lives.

If you were looking for a reason to get some cauliflower in your belly (besides the fact that it’s delicious) scientists have just discovered a very important truth about the gem’s fluffy florets.

Published in the European Journal of Cancer, a 2015 study found a substantial yet somewhat surprising link between the health properties found within white fruits and vegetables and a lower risk of stomach cancer.

Researchers analysed over 32,000 cases of gastric cancer patients, paying close attention to their diets.

While they found that those who consumed a diet high in sodium and alcohol were particularly at risk, they also discovered that foods rich in vitamin C tended to have a “protective effect” against gastric cancers.

And since one serving of cauliflower makes up 77% of your recommended daily intake, consuming this vegetable has never been so important.

In case you need some more convincing, cauliflower also contains admirable levels of sulforaphane, a sulfur compound that has also been shown to kill cancer stem cells by slowing the growth rate of tumours.

The anti-oxidants within the florets also help to prevent cellular mutations, thus reducing the risk of breast and reproductive cancers in both men and women.

And to top it all off, the fatty acids present in the white gems help with a good night’s sleep, muscle movement, learning and memory.

Whilst we’re only just learning this eye-opening new information, it would seem that some of our most idolised A-listers have been onto the health properties of cauliflower for years.

Jennifer Aniston has long been a fan of the ivory buds, having consumed them as well as eggs for her main source of essential fatty acids.

And back in 2014, Blake Lively revealed her favourite cauliflower recipe on her now-deleted blog as part of a collaboration with Top Chef winner, Hung Huynh.

Blake Lively ate cauliflower during her first pregnancy to help the healthy development of her growing little one.

“The star here is cauliflower. We love cauliflower because it doesn’t really taste like a vegetable. It could almost be a fake potato. Especially when there’s cheese involved,” the then-pregnant star wrote alongside her recipe for roasted cauliflower with pomegranate.

With plenty of calcium for growing bones and antioxidants to fight off disease, it is perhaps assumed that the Gossip Girl star was indeed cauliflower crazy due to the immense health benefits it promotes, particularly in pregnancy.
