After the international success of The Big Bang Theory, its co-creator Chuck Lorre has given fans an update on its new spin-off series.
However, the update on the highly anticipated series isn’t what fans hoped for as Chuck merely referred to the project as being in its “prenatal” stage.
The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019.
(Image: Getty)“It’s prenatal,” the writer-producer told TVLine.
“You don’t talk about the birth until the second trimester, I believe, is the rule. That’s a long way of saying no, I’ve got nothing to say about it other than it’s something that we are discussing.”
On April 12, 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed Chuck was developing a new comedy series “derived” from the hit CBS series. No details regarding the series were released, aside that it would take place within the Big Bang Theory universe.
Three weeks later, the Writers Guild of America went on a 148-day strike which ended on September 27 – putting any further developments on hold.
Young Sheldon has aired six seasons, with seven yet to come.
(Image: Getty)After The Big Bang Theory wrapped up in 2019 with an incredible 12 seasons under its belt, Chuck was questioned by TVLine regarding a potential spin off. At the time, the co-creator commented there were no solid ideas.
“Unless there was a creative reason to do it — a wonderfully, wonderfully creative reason to do it — than the only reason [to do it] is economics, and that’s not good enough,” he explained.
“This is hard work. And if you’re going to do it, you gotta love what you’re doing; you’ve gotta be passionate about it. And if you’re just chasing money, that’s not enough.”
Chuck – with his co-creator Steven Molaro – was also the brilliant mind behind Young Sheldon which aired in 2017. The spin off series was a huge global success, following the childhood of Big Bang character Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons).
Young Sheldon is set in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with little Sheldon (Iain Armitage) growing up with his family in Texas.
So far, the show has aired a successful six seasons with a seventh and final season yet to come. CBS has announced Young Sheldon will return on February 15 and finish with a one-hour series finale, set to air in the USA on May 16, 2024. The final season will also be shorter than those before it.
“We look forward to seeing their final season unfold and giving it a proper send off with the best episodes yet for their fans to enjoy,” CBS president of Entertainment, Amy Reisenbach said.
