It’s another day in the skies for the crew in RFDS. Or so they think. Pilot Graham starts his shift grouchier than usual because he’s holding onto a secret of base manager Leonie (Justine Clarke).

She’s due for surgery in Dubbo following a health scare, but doesn’t want the pity of the rest of the crew.

But when pilot Wayne (Rob Collins) requests an unexpected detour at the behest of a prisoner patient, it leads to him and Graham (Rodney Afif) butting heads after a tense emergency landing.

The emergency landing forces the prisoner, his guard and doctor Wayne to hang on tight.

Meanwhile, senior medical officer Eliza (Emma Hamilton) is back in town from the UK and at the job that makes her feel most alive.

A combination of her son Henry (Ash Hodgkinson) deciding to go travelling, leaving her an empty-nester, and hearing about Leonie’s (Justine Clarke) health problems compelled Eliza to book a ticket to Australia.

But all is not the same as when she left and not everyone is thrilled about her surprise arrival. Flight nurse Pete (Stephen Peacocke) is left reeling from the gut punch of his former flame turning up unexpectedly.

For Emma, returning to Broken Hill to play Eliza was a great outcome. “It’s beautiful,” the 38-year-old tells TV WEEK of filming in the outback.

“We love going to Broken Hill. And the community has embraced us, because it’s their show and they feel as passionate about it as we do. Their heart and soul go into every episode. Cast and crew, we love it so much.”

While Emma found returning a breeze, the same can’t be said for Eliza. “Eliza had to go back and settle everything in the UK,” she explains.

“I think she comes back to Broken Hill with certain expectations (about her relationship with Pete.) But unfortunately, it appears Pete has moved on.”

But Pete must put aside his pride when he and Eliza are forced to work together to retrieve a critically ill four-year-old with a life-threatening condition. When they discover what’s wrong, they disagree on the best course of action to take.

Also, Wayne discovers Mira’s (Ash Ricardo) secret: she’s pregnant. As he deals with the shock, neither know how to deal with the unexpected news.

Will they keep the baby and jeopardise their careers?

At first, Eliza and Graham were the only ones to know about the procedure. But all that changes when an emergency patient drop-off left most of the crew in Dubbo and they’re filled in on her condition.

When Leonie wakes up from the procedure, her team are there to support her at her bedside in her darkest hour.
