The replacement for Lisa Wilkinson’s co-hosting gig on the Today show has officially been announced – and it’s Georgie Gardner.

Yep, the popular presenter is making her return to the program despite initially turning down the coveted role .

The announcement was made this morning on the show. The 47-year-old said she’s “thrilled” to be rejoining the Today family in 2018, with co-host Karl Stefanovic, news presenter Sylvia Jeffreys, sports presenter Tim Gilbert, entertainment editor Richard Wilkins, weather presenter Natalia Cooper and finance editor Ross Greenwood.

“When this opportunity presented itself I decided to grab it with both hands and run with it,” she told 9Honey.

“Making that decision three years ago to pull back on the work front was definitely the right call and it’s not lost on me how lucky I was to be able to make that choice. Not all working parents have that luxury.

“The new routine will shake things up on the home front, there’s no doubt, but they’re up for it,” she said of her new schedule.

“Unlike last time the kids are older, they’re more independent and to be honest this is going to give them a chance to step up.”

Her soon-to-be co-host Karl said: “It’s great to have Georgie back. I think the best thing about her is her heart. Viewers know she cares.

“She is connected to what other mums are going through and really feels for them – and she’s got a wicked sense of humour. She’s also very committed to making sure information is right, in an age where it’s not in a lot of news sources, that’s a great attribute to have,” he continued.

Lisa Wilkinson who left the program last month after a contract dispute with Nine, congratulated Georgie on Twitter.

“Warmest congratulations to my friend @GeorgieG who has just been announced as the new co-host of @TheTodayShow. She will nail it.”

Sylvia also wished her new colleague a warm welcome.

Georgie left Today in 2014 after seven years as news presenter to spend more time with her family. “The early hours are punishing and after seven years it’s time for me to catch up on some sleep,” she said as she bid farewell to the team.

“After unwavering support from Tim and my kids I want to give back to them. I figure I have limited time of Bronte and Angus wanting and needing their mother around, so I want to maximise and cherish these precious years.”

She then moved to 9 News and Today Extra as presenter.

Deb Knight has been filling in for Lisa since her absence.
