The Voice semi-finalist Tommy Novak says his marriage breakdown was “a bit of a shock to the system, for sure”. But writing songs about the heartache has helped him deal with it.
“I put a lot of my feelings about the marriage ending into my own music, which I’ve just released,” he tells TV WEEK.
“So that was a bit of a cathartic process, writing songs about my experience and my feelings of loss.”
Tommy has released an EP with seven songs on it, and he says the response to that has been “really amazing”.
“it’s been really special to connect with people, not only people in Australia, but people around the world, sending me messages and saying they’ve come across my music. So that’s really special.”
As Tommy explained at his blind audition, it was his marriage breakdown that led him to reassess his life and decide to quit his corporate job to pursue a career in music.
“I’ve got amazing people in my life that helped me to focus on the future and what possibilities there could be, as opposed to spending too much time focusing on the loss of the marriage,” he explains.
At 36, Tommy is older than most people hoping to break into the music industry. But he thinks there are advantages to his age – like, being prepared for the possibility that none of the coaches on The Voice would turn for him.
“What’s the worst that can happen if they don’t turn their chairs? That’s okay. I’m still going to release my music. And I’m still going to go out there and I still want to connect with people.”
