Things get tense in The Block sharehouse this week, with the contestants accusing Chantel and Wyatt of not pulling their weight when it comes to cleaning up after meals.

But Chantel and Wyatt are hitting back – telling Woman’s Day that they’ve been frozen out by their “insecure” competitors because of “jealousy”.

Chantel and Wyatt tell their side of the story

“I did feel like we were on the outer, I felt an off feeling that I couldn’t quite put my finger on, and now watching the season back, you can see it was in fact jealousy over other teams not being able to finish rooms,” says Chantel, 32.

“Comments were made about how we cheat to get ahead and how I need to learn to style, and I think only insecure people want to put someone down for actually giving it a go.

“People only talk about you if you’re doing something right. One comment made about us was that if they found out we were cheating, ‘fists are going to fly’, and I feel that was inappropriate, especially since it was a made-up gossipy rumour,” adds the mum of three.

“If that comment came from a man, that would be considered aggressive and standover behaviour, but because it comes from a woman, it’s apparently OK to say that.”

Chantel says accusations that she and Wyatt, 30, were lazy are “exaggerated”.

“We both used one bowl and one spoon each morning. Other than that, we ate Youfoodz. And there was a cleaner once a week. We never hung out in the shared living spaces,” she says.

“We would wake up every morning to wine glasses and a complete mess from the night before, which we felt was not our job to clean up. We didn’t cook the entire show, and we kept our belongings in our bedroom, where we would spend most of our time.

“It became more of a topic of conversation between the contestants when the teams felt like we were always ahead of them and they were feeling frustrated with us because of that, which spilled over into nitpicking at us never being around to help ‘clean up’. And, of course, none of this was said to our faces.”

Friend fallout

And Chantel says the pair didn’t initially feel any tension in the house but adds there were “more bad moments by the end” of their time on the Block site, especially between the Gold Coast couple and outspoken Jolene, 42.

“Initially we got along with Jolene at face value but we weren’t very close,” she says. “Towards the end, we weren’t friends. We were closest to Court and Sev and still are!”
