Now, decades on, Woman’s Day can reveal that Lisa McCune and Martin Sacks are secretly plotting a TV comeback – and hopefully one that won’t leave us all as traumatised!

Insiders reveal the former co-stars, who captured the hearts of millions as Mount Thomas’ favourite couple, have been meeting up behind the scenes and are ready to share the screen again.

“Lisa and Martin loved working together and have always wanted to do it again,” reveals a close insider. “They’ve been talking and are keen to reunite. Fans would absolutely love to see them back together on screen. There’s still so much affection for Maggie and P.J.”

While the talented pair are waiting for the right script to come along, the insider says they’ve maintained their close connection over the years.

“They’ve always had that connection,” our source continues. “They were great mates before, during and after Blue Heelers, and that sort of friendship doesn’t just disappear when a show finishes.”

‘Something special coming to an end’

While Australia remembers Maggie’s death as one of the more traumatising TV moments of our time, it wasn’t just Blue Heelers fans that struggled with it – Martin did too.

“They were both genuinely saddened when Maggie and P.J.’s story came to an end,” our source says. “Martin found Maggie’s departure particularly emotional. They’d spent years working side by side, and Lisa wasn’t just his screen partner, she was a very close friend. There was a real sense that something special was coming to an end.”

In happier news, the dynamic duo “never really lost touch”.

“They’re not the sort of friends who need to speak every week, but they absolutely keep up with each other. Birthdays, special milestones, big career moments — they’ll reach out and check in,” our source says. “There’s a lot of affection there. They’ve both gone on and built completely different lives and careers, but when they talk about Blue Heelers, there’s still that instant connection.”

Searching for the right story

The bad news is, fans may be in for a bit of a wait when it comes to the reunion.

While it’s been 26 years since their Blue Heelers story ended, Lisa and Martin’s names last appeared together in an episode of Sea Patrol in 2010, where Lisa starred as Lieutenant Kate McGregor and Martin made a guest appearance as Derek Cavanaugh.

But fans can hopefully expect their next stint to be more than just a fleeting moment.

“They could probably walk onto a set tomorrow and slip straight back into that rhythm,” an industry insider says. “[But] they’d have to find the right story. Nobody wants a reunion just for the sake of nostalgia. If Lisa and Martin are going to do it, it needs to be something that gives them proper material and reminds audiences why they loved those two characters in the first place.”

So it’s time to keep your fingers crossed, Blue Heelers fans!

“You’d have a lot of very happy Blue Heelers fans if those two appeared on screen together again. Maggie and P.J. are one of those television pairings people never quite forget,” the insider concludes.
