Although King Charles is best known through his life of public service, curiosity surrounding who the King really is behind closed doors is increasing in the lead-up to his coronation this weekend.

Luckily for royal enthusiasts, the BBC is hoping to demystify the world of the new King with their latest documentary release, providing viewers with never before seen footage of the life of the King.

From official engagements at the Royal Mint with his parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, to a 20-year-old Prince’s solo holiday in Malta, ‘Charles R: The Making of a Monarch’ will explore both the public and private life of the new King over his nearly 70 years of service.

Following the success of ‘Elizabeth: The Unseen Queen’ for the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, the BBC has been given unprecedented access to the British Film Institute’s archives and the royal family’s private home video collection to construct a well-rounded portrait of King Charles’ public and private life.

‘It’s a real privilege to be trusted with such rare, unseen archive material to create a new and distinctive portrait of someone so famous and photographed’, said BBC’s Head of History Simon Young.

Viewers will also be treated to a guided tour of the new King’s life by the King himself, with previously unheard interview excerpts narrating King Charles’ recollections of his life as a schoolboy, his crowning as Prince of Wales, and his memories of his mother’s 1953 coronation.

This is the first time the public has been provided such an up-close view of the House of Windsor since the family’s 1969 BBC special ‘Royal Family.’

While the 1969 documentary has been largely hidden from public view, the latest release by the BBC is hoping to provide a more holistic view of the King, his personal life, and his charitable ventures.

Creative Director for BBC Studios Events Productions Claire Popplewell stated, ‘This documentary brings audiences a treasure trove of scenes filmed across the life of the King … Charles R: The Making of a Monarch tells the story of how a Prince became a King.’
