Meet the 10 artists competing in Eurovision – Australia Decides 2020

SBS and Blink TV have confirmed all 10 artists competing in Eurovision – Australia Decides in 2020.

The winner will go on to represent Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

They’ll be following in the footsteps of Kate Miller-Heidke, who became the first publicly voted artist to represent the country in 2019.

Each artist will pen an original song under three minutes in length, to fit the Eurovision Song Contest requirements.

Jack Vidgen

Having risen to fame after winning Australia’s Got Talent in 2011, and recently competing on The Voice Australia in 2019, Jack Vidgen is a song contest savant. The 22-year-old singer will perform his new track, I Am King I Am Queen at the Australia Decides event next year.

“I am incredibly excited to be a part of Eurovision – Australia Decides 2020 and actually can’t believe it’s really happening,” Jack says. “I’m a huge fan of Eurovision, so to be competing for the opportunity to represent Australia is mind-blowing.

“[My song] is a real representation of me and everything I stand for and I think that everyone, young and old, will be able to relate to and take inspiration from this song. I hope that the Eurovision audiences love it as much as I do!”

Diana Rouvas

After being crowned The Voice Australia 2019 winner, Diana Rouvas is excited to be taking on the world of Eurovision!

“I’m really excited to be in Eurovision – Australia Decides. As a Greek Australian, I am proud to represent the culture that our country is rich and abundant in, and I’d be so honoured to stand on that stage for Australia!’ she says.

“It’s an incredible opportunity for any artist. I’d be bringing my true authentic self to the stage.”

Jordan-Ravi

19-year-old Jordan-Ravi competed in America’s Got Talent 2019 earlier this year, before returning home to Darwin to continue pursuing his dream. The singer-songwriter is excited for his Australian television debut.

“I am so honoured to be given this opportunity,” he says. “I will be performing Pushing Stars, a song which came in via the SBS Song Portal, and was co-written by a couple of this year’s Eurovision – Australia Decides stars, George Sheppard and Tania Doko. I am grateful that they put their trust in me to infuse my style and flare to their work this year!”

Jaguar Jonze

From being a Triple J Unearthed Artist, to performing at this year’s Byron Bay Falls Festival, to joining the Eurovision – Australia Decides contest in 2020! It’s been a big couple of years for Jaguar Jonze.

“For me, Eurovision – Australia Decides is a massive opportunity to show Australia who I am as an artist and what I’m passionate about.” she says.

“The selected 10 artists are all so talented and I’d be so happy for any one of us to represent Australia in Eurovision. I think it shows the diverse pool of creativity and talent in this nation and I’m honoured to be a part of it.”

Casey Donovan

Casey Donovan shot to fame after winning Australian Idol in 2004, and was asked to join Australia Decides after opening the show earlier this year.

“I’m so excited to be a part of Eurovision – Australia Decides after opening the show and seeing the amazing talent,” Casey says.

“When I was asked I thought, what an amazing thing to be a part of! It doesn’t matter what happens for me, Proud is such an incredible song written by the talented Justine Eltakchi and I’m proud to sing it. I can’t wait to share the stage with some of Australia’s most talented singers.”

Vanessa Amorosi

Vanessa Amorosi has been in the Australian music industry for two decades and recently released her new album Back to Love, with fans guessing she’ll be performing Gimme Love in the song contest.

“I am a proud Aussie and to have the opportunity to sing one of my songs on a huge international stage representing Australia would be unforgettable,” she says.

“I look forward to Australia hearing my song and working alongside friends and fellow musicians on this journey. It’s going to be very special.”

iOTA

iOTA is a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter, stage and screen actor, writer, composer and voice-over artist.

He has seven albums and has been in feature films Mad Max: Fury Road and The Great Gatsby, along with stage shows including Smoke & Mirrors, Hedwig & the Angry Inch and The Rocky Horror Show.

“I’m not your typical music competition kind of guy,” he says. “But I am attracted to the Eurovision Song Contest for the colour and movement, music and performance, light and shade, creativity and self expression, singing and working an audience.”

Mitch Tambo

Renowned First Nations entertainer Mitch Tambo is known for blending traditional sounds and language with modern contemporary beats and rhythms. He first appeared on our screens in Australia’s Got Talent earlier this year.

“I’m thrilled to be part of Eurovision – Australia Decides in 2020 and to get the chance to perform on the world’s biggest stage,” he says.

“Eurovision songs often mix elements of traditional and contemporary sounds, which is exactly what I set out to do in my own music. Most importantly, it brings different cultures together all under the banner of music, which is beautiful thing!”

Montaigne

Indie artist Montaigne has seen major success in the past few years, picking up an ARIA Award and multiple spots on Triple J’s Hottest 100.

“I’m excited to participate in Eurovision – Australia Decides for the opportunity to release the part of me that is dramatic and extreme,” Montaigne says. “I manage to do it without a massive international music event as impetus, but on the big stage in Europe in front of millions would be everything the drama queen egomaniac inside me could want and more.

“It’s licence to let her out. And of course to represent my country! I didn’t quite get that far in football, so it would be cool to do it in music. It’s like the World Cup for pop.”

Didirri

Growing up in Warrnambool he first went on the road at a young age as a circus performer, and later learned to play music on the piano. After completing a Bachelor of Music, he began writing and started busking on the streets of Melbourne. From busking, to touring with Vance Joy, Hozier, Tash Sultana, The Temper Trap and more, it’s been a quick rise for the young star.

“I have always been interested in writers. Although the world of Eurovision is new to me, from the outside it seems to respect a well written song above all else. People seem to be free to express their art in whatever way they want,” he says.

“I’m a fan of ABBA, they wrote unfiltered, iconic anthems. My sister and I used to sing their stuff together in the bathroom. Who knows how they have influenced me, I’m quite a mix bag of ideas,” he reveals.

“Personal experience inspires most of my own writing – all I hope to do is to help people express some part of themselves. I’m also over the moon to be joining the line-up with my friend Montaigne who I respect very much.”
