If you’ve ever watched Mary Poppins or Singin’ in the Rain, you might have mistaken a recent picture of Prince William and Duchess Catherine for a scene right out of the iconic musicals.

Indeed in a serendipitous moment, the internet has gone wild over a new photo of the royal couple, who look to be dancing as they attended a Buckingham Palace garden party in May.

But now, the real story behind the candid picture has emerged, and it’s just as good as a musical narrative in itself!

In the incredibly rare candid picture, William is seen wearing a top hat and holding an umbrella. He appears to be leading Kate, who is flashing a dazzling smile at him as she gracefully accepts his hand and almost… prances his way.

The moment certainly makes it look as though the pair are mid-way through a musical dance number, but the person behind the lens, Lucy Stafford, had a lot more to say on the matter.

Speaking to Hello!, Lucy said: “As they were leaving the party, Kate was spending a lot of time talking to the guests and William had to hurry her along, which is the moment the photo was taken!”

She continued: “I feel so fortunate to have attended the party and will definitely never forget it!”

And after seeing the photo go viral on social media for it’s portrayal of pure joy between the royals, we won’t be either!

The image has swept the internet, with a number of other royal fans sharing the picture.

One account elaborated on the story, claiming that Kate had spoken about her son Prince George’s reaction to her Chelsea Flower Show garden design, which has been displayed in all its glory this week.

According to the account @royals.fabfour, Kate revealed that George was, “upset to leave so she’s going to take him back before school so he can see the other gardens.”

Too cute! It’s not hard to imagine given the amazing pics we saw of the Camrbidge family playing in the garden earlier this week.

As for Lucy’s garden party picture, there’s no denying the day was a memorable one.

Writing on her Instagram account, the fellow royal fan explained her day: “So honoured to have been invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace. We had the most delicious afternoon tea in the gardens and even finished the day by meeting the Queen.”

She then explained that Her Majesty had revealed quite the tale to her – almost being killed in 1994 when a cricket ball flew towards her head, only to be caught at the last minute!

Wearing a beautiful blush pink Alexander McQueen dress, Kate looked every bit the elegant Princess, but it was her gorgeous pearl earrings that real caught our eyes.

The stunning pair had once belonged to Kate’s late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

It seems the royals day at Buckingham Palace was truly memorable on many levels!
