Rising Aussie tennis star Nick Kyrgios has paid a touching tribute to his grandmother Julianah Foster who died last year.
The 19-year-old from Canberra took a moment to remember his grandmother on Monday night after surviving round one at the Australian Open.
Dropping to one knee and bowing his head, he kissed his 74 tattoo on his middle finger. After winning the match, he walked over the television camera and wrote the number 74 across the lens. The 74 refrence left many fans puzzled on social media.
He later posted an image of himself on to social media with the caption: “You may be gone, but I know you’re watching.”
His 74 tattoo makes reference to age his grandmother was when she died on July 13 last year.
“My grandma passed away last year, that is something I still think about every day, and that’s probably made me a little bit more mature,” Kyrgios said.
“She was practically my mum when I was a kid. My mum was always working so she was taking me to tennis training every day, taking me school, picking me up from school.
“She was also living at our house so she was a massive influence.”
Fortunately, she was able to witness Nick’s famous match against Rafael Nadal, where the beat the world number one at Wimbledon last year.
Nick, who is very close with his family, plays again on January 21. His family are in Melbourne supporting him on the sidelines as he continues to rise through the ranks.
