How the country reacted with Malcolm Turnbull toppling Tony Abbott as Prime Minister

Tony Abbott prided himself in stopping the boats but now his Prime Ministership has sailed thanks to Australia’s new leader, Malcolm Turnbull.

After ousting former Liberal Leader Tony Abbott, Malcolm has taken over to become Australia’s 29th prime minister.

It could be viewed as a case of history repeating itself, making it the second time a first-term prime minister has been brought down by their party within five years.

“This has been a very important, sobering experience today,” Australia’s new PM expressed, after winning his party room vote 54 – 44.

Adding, “I’m very humbled by it, by the great honour and responsibility given to me today.”

In a bid to turn over a new “economic” lead, with Julie Bishop by his side, remaining as Deputy Liberal Leader, Malcolm has promised a “thoroughly Liberal government’ committed to “freedom, the individual and the market”.

While Malcolm couldn’t contain his happiness, admitting “there has never been a more exciting time to be alive than today and there has never been a more exciting time to be an Australian,” it seems the country has their own views on the matter.

Lee Lin Chin’s hilarious bid to become our new PM.

Australian voters, celebrities and keyboard warriors have all taken to Twitter to express their thoughts on Malcolm Turnbull’s leadership challenge.

While some have shared excitement over the change, others took part in remembering the fallen PM with the hashtags #putyourspeedosout and #putyouronionsout in a gesture of ‘support’.

But the highlight has to SBS Newsreader Lee Lin Chin’s personal campaign to become our nation’s “overlord”.

With her hashtag #LeeLinforPM trending nationally, the journalist put forward many humorous tweets about life under her rule.

She began her tweets with a simple request to Tony:

“I’m flying to China tomorrow. If @TonyAbbottMHR could clear out Kirribilli whilst I’m gone that would be lovely #LeeLinforPM #auspol”

The SBS star confirmed all our suspicions that she is in fact immortal: “First order of business, PM term is now lifelong. As I’m an immortal we won’t have to waste times with elections #LeeLinforPM”

And there is only two people who could stand among the Lee Lin’s prestigious ranks…

“Second order of business, deputy shall be my best friend @Sandra_Sully and treasurer my boyfriend @karlstefanovic”

We imagine Lee Lin would install fashionable sun safety!

A woman of fabulous fashion and love of craft beer, Lee Lin advised what she’d focus on when ruling the country.

“I of course will be Minister for Women, Fashion and Craft Beer.”

Before promptly adding: “Backstabbing will be unacceptable in my new government. If you come at the queen you best not miss!”

While nothing can top the potential of living under a Lee Lin Chin dictatorship, one Twitter user has come very close.

@RealFreeBrowny tweeted WWE legend, Hulk Hogan to give a sympathetic shout out to Tony Abbott after losing his job. Of course he sent out a message of support.

Unfortunately Hulk realised that it was all a troll and ended up deleting his tweet, and blocking Australian Twitter user @RealFreeBrowny..

Until the next leadership battle, check out some of the funniest reactions below.
