Two people have been charged with theft and fraud after it is alleged they stole a man’s wallet while he lay dying after a horrific car crash on Saturday morning.

Police in Hervey Bay, on Queensland’s east coast, allege that while others tried desperately to save a critically injured 37-year-old Urraween man following the smash his wallet was taken by somebody on the scene.

Since it was stolen the credit card has allegedly been used on at least 11 occasions at businesses in Hervey Bay and Maryborough, police said.

Police executed a search warrant yesterday at a Boat Harbour Drive address in Torquay where a 28-year-old Torquay man and a 27-year-old Kawangan woman were taken into custody.

The man has been charged with one count of stealing and four counts of fraud, meanwhile the woman has been charged with one count of stealing and eight counts of fraud.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The woman was bailed and is expected back in court on January 12, 2017.
