Mother told breastfeeding is “unhygienic and wrong” by Kmart staff

“[They said] if they had known my intentions they would've ‘refused entry’ to me.”

A young mother has lashed out at Kmart on social media after she was told it was “unhygienic and wrong” to breastfeed her six-month-old in an empty change room.

Whitley Magnussen was shopping at the Stocklands store in Rockhampton, Queensland when she claims two shop assistants “ganged up on and shouted at” her as she tried to feed her daughter Layla.

“I explained to them both that it’s my legal right to breastfeed wherever I want however both of the staff members were quick to jump down my throat with reasons why I shouldn’t do it,’ she wrote.

“[They said] if they had known my intentions they would’ve ‘refused entry’ to me (even though I also had clothes to try on).”

She complained to the store manager who was extremely apologetic and agreed that it was her legal right to breastfeed her daughter.

“After her store manager and I had explained what she said was horribly wrong and extremely discriminating she still claimed that it was unhygienic and wrong so all I got was a quick blunt “I’m sorry” – the other staff member was nowhere to be seen and did not apologise.”

Ms Magnussen shared her story on Kmart’s Facebook page on Tuesday night and they were very quick to respond, with many Facebook users reacting to her post saying Kmart should be “ashamed” and that they have “lost loyal customers.”
